10 Questions you should ask a lawyer before giving any firm your injury claim

Monday July 5, 2010 at 6:34am

It may be a good idea to have a checklist of questions to ask a lawyer when you first contact their firm. Have a paper and pen to take notes.

Choosing the right solicitor to handle your personal injury claim can make a difference not only in improving your chances of winning your claim but also in how much compensation you may get.

You can add to the following list other special questions that may apply to your own personal injury claim.

If you would like to know more about how to select the right solicitor for your type of claim download our Free copy of Choosing the right  solicitor to handle your claim.

Here are the ten questions you should ask a lawyer:

1. Who will be working on my claim (name and status of the lawyer)?

2. What is the experience of the injury lawyer who will be working on my claim?

3. How many cases like mine has the solicitor handled in the past year?

4. If you are dealing with a claims management company, ask them how much they will keep from your compensation? How do they set their fees? What does their fee include?

6. What are your policies with regard to returning phone calls, providing copies of all correspondence and other documents, keeping me informed about the progress of my case?

7. How long will I have to wait to get my compensation?

8. What problems can you foresee?

9. How will you solve those problems?

10. How often do your claims go to court? Do you prefer going to court? Do you settle most of your claims out of court?

Based on the answers to your questions, your observations about the injury lawyer’s style and how you feel after the interview is over, you should be able to tell if the solicitor you have contacted is the right lawyer for your claim.

Although initial interviews can be very intense, you should also experience some relief if you have met a personal injury lawyer who will be good for your claim. If you notice that you are not feeling better after the contact that is a signal possibly to continue your search.

When you find the right mix of care, commitment, wisdom and insight, you will recognise that is the right injury lawyer for your claim.
