Children and young people cycling accidents

Monday June 14, 2010 at 9:33am
Most cycling accidents involving children and young people are caused when drivers collide with them. Children cyclists sustain injuries mainly at junctions when overtaking stationary vehicles, cars turning right or left or when stopping.

Cyclist children hit by cars tend to suffer severe injuries as the cyclist child is lifted up in the air before landing on the windscreen of the car then rolling back down on to the tarmac. If the speed of the car is in excess of 30 miles per hour, the child cyclist is likely to suffer very serious injuries.

You can claim compensation for your child for any injuries he sustained in a road accident as a cyclist. You are also entitled to claim any losses or expenses including care expenses you may have incurred as a result of your child’s injury.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimated that in 2005, 250 children died as a result of accident injuries. Almost half of these deaths were due to road accidents. In England, road accidents were responsible for approximately 101,000 hospital admissions.

Unlike adults, injury to a child can have long lasting impact on all his life. It may affect the child’s development especially if he sustained a head injury. It is a very heavy burden on the child and you the parent or guardian.

If your child has suffered injuries in a car accident as a cyclist, you should get the details of the vehicle that was involved and take the child to a doctor. Other motorists or the police may have recorded the details of the driver responsible for your child’s injuries.

Because children needs are different from the needs of adults, their claims for injury compensation require specialist expertise. You will need the help of a specialist children injury lawyer to assist you make a claim for your child.
