Claiming Compensation for Spinal cord Injury

Friday June 4, 2010 at 6:22am
A spinal cord injury is damage to the spinal cord which then results in a loss of function such as mobility or feeling. Spinal cord injuries are caused by car accidents, motorcycle accidents, gunshots, violence or falls.

If you or your loved one suffered a spinal cord injury as a result of a car/motorcycle accident or a fall at a building or construction site, or as a result of a crime of violence, you may be entitled to personal injury compensation.

A Spinal cord injury is different from back or neck injury. You may suffer injuries to your back or neck yet not sustain a spinal cord injury because with back injuries only your bones (the vertebrae) are damaged.

A spinal cord injury is a very serious injury. You will require a long period of rehabilitation at a specialist spinal cord injury treatment unit and rehabilitation centre. You are looking at spending between 5-8 months at a rehabilitation unit undergoing treatment and rehabilitation depending on the seriousness of your injuries.

Besides loss of sensation or motor functioning, people with spinal cord injuries also experience other changes, for example, dysfunction of the bowel and bladder, sexual functioning, inability to breathe, low blood pressure, reduced control of body temperature, inability to sweat below the level of the injury and chronic pain.

At the moment, there is no cure for spinal cord injuries, but clinical trials are taking place.

If you have suffered a spinal cord injury, you need the help of a specialist personal injury lawyer to help you make a claim for your spinal cord injury compensation.
