How safe are our children at school?

Thursday June 17, 2010 at 7:44am
Children spend a large proportion of their time at school than at home. While accidents in classrooms are common, children are more vulnerable during noon time particularly in the playground when engaged in sports activities such as football and other forms of contact play and recreation.

The most common causes of accidents at school are trips and falls, dangerous playground equipment, crossing busy roads or walking in traffic, food poisoning and poor adult supervision.

If your child has suffered injuries in an accident at school, he may be entitled to claim compensation for his injuries.

Sometimes, children suffer serious injuries at school as a result of a failure to comply with safety standards. The types of injuries children sustain include ankle injuries, fractures, lacerations, sprains and burns.

Most injuries at school can be avoided if teachers exercise proper supervision and ensure that children are taught how to use playground equipment safely.

Statistics relating to accidents involving children are staggering.
The World Health organisation (WHO) estimated that in 2005, 250 children died as a result of accident injuries. Car accidents, trip and fall accidents, burn accidents and food poisoning are some of the accidents that cause serious injuries to children at school.

Unlike adults, injury to a child can have long lasting impact on all his life. It may affect the child’s development, relationships, learning and play. It is a very heavy burden on you and your child especially if the injuries are serious.

Because children needs are different from the needs of adults, their claims require specialist expertise. You will need the help of a specialist children injury lawyer to assist you make a claim for your child.
